Youth and women entrepreneurs participating in USTADI Foundation capacity development programs in rural Kenya

Building Thriving Youth & Women Enterprises Across Kenya

We equip local entrepreneurs, smallholder farmers, and communities (especially youth) with the skills, market connections, and capital needed to grow their enterprises and create job opportunities for improved and sustainable livelihoods.

Vibrant, Self-Sustaining Markets That Transform Rural Livelihoods

USTADI is a Kenyan organization dedicated to accelerating enterprise growth for rural youth and women. We don't bring one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, we ask local communities what skills they need, connect them with verified local trainers, and link their businesses directly to profitable markets so their growth is self-sustaining. Our capacity development model puts community growth at the center by combining market facilitation services, catalytic technical assistance grants, and an active learning platform that ensures long-term local ownership.

Value Chain Facilitation

We connect smallholder farmers and youth groups directly to profitable markets. By strengthening key agricultural value chains such as fisheries, dairy, cassava, livestock, and grains, we help producers reduce post-harvest losses, access modern equipment, and secure innovative financing to grow their incomes.

Boosting Rural Youth Employment Through Agribusiness Hubs

2021–2025
US$ 2.5 Million

The JOY Project creates sustainable employment for young people across Kilifi, Kakamega, and Nakuru counties by building integrated agribusiness hubs. In partnership with county governments, TVETs, academic institutions, and the private sector, we equip youth with practical technical, managerial, and business skills. From hands-on training to market connections, the project ensures young entrepreneurs have everything they need to launch viable, long-term agricultural enterprises.

"The project ensures youth are capacitated with the skills to ensure viability and sustainability of agribusiness opportunities based on the demand of the labour market."

William Otwane with his poultry in Angurai East Ward, Busia County

Meet William Otwane, whose journey into poultry entrepreneurship began with a change in how he viewed the chickens he was already keeping. Through the Wezesha III project, he transformed traditional livestock keeping into a diversified farming enterprise that now includes poultry, pigs, vegetables, and soybeans, creating a sustainable livelihood and inspiring other young people in his community.

"Before, I never thought of selling chickens. We simply kept them. If visitors came, we would slaughter one. They were not a business. One lesson stayed with me: we should rear chickens as a business."
